Tandoori Fish is one of the most common dishes of the seafood category in Indian restaurants. Most non-vegetarian people love Tandoori Fish. The delicate, flaky fish coated with aromatic spices is often served as an appetizer.

Fish is not a huge part of regular meals in Punjab but people do enjoy it occasionally. People in southern states of India consume much more fish compared to the people in northern states, it is because being near the sea coast, fish and other seafood are more widely accessible in southern India. However, fish is available in abundance in Canada. There are so many different types of fish available here and some of them are abundantly expensive. Well .. you don’t have to buy the most expensive fish to enjoy this dish. I use salmon to make Tandoori Fish. It is a nice firm fish. Tandoori fish is a weekly ritual at my home. My family loves Tandoori Fish. I make it as a meal for dinner as opposed to an appetizer and serve it with Vegetable Pulao or roasted potatoes and salad.

How to make Tandoori Fish:

  1. Gently wash fish under running tap water and pat dry with a clean paper towel. Cut fish into 1 – 2 inch cubes. Prick each piece with a fork and keep it aside.
  2. In medium size bowl (preferably non-metal) add thickened yogurt. To the yogurt, add garlic & ginger paste, green chili paste, lime juice, olive oil and all the spices. Mix well with a whisk until all ingredients are combined well.

  3. Add fish pieces to the yogurt marinade and gently rub the marinade onto the fish. Cover and leave it in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour or overnight for the best results. The longer the fish is left in the marinade, the better the end results will be. The lime juice and yogurt will help to tenderize the fish and absorb the flavors.

  4. Fish can be baked in the oven or on the barbecue.
    For oven – Preheat oven the 350F. Line a baking dish with foil and lightly spray with oil. Take fish pieces from the marinade and put it in the baking dish. Bake it until fish is fully cooked, turning over once or twice.
    For barbecue – Line the grill with foil wrap. Preheat the barbecue. Lightly spray the foil with oil. Take fish pieces from the marinade and place it on the foil. Turn the fish over frequently to prevent it from sticking. Cook until fish is fully cooked.

    Note: If you wish to put the fish directly on the barbcque grill, ensure to oil the grill very well to prevent the fish from sticking to it.

  5. Garnish with onion rings, green peppers and lime. Serve hot with Pudina chutney.

    Ingredients

    • 500 grams of salmon or any firm fish (cut into 1-2 inch pieces)
    • ¾ cup thick plain yogurt
    • ¼ tsp garlic paste
    • ½ tsp ginger paste
    • ¼ tsp green chili paste
    • ¼ tsp red chili powder
    • ¼ tsp ground black pepper
    • ¼ tsp salt or to taste
    • ¼ tsp coriander powder
    • 1 tbsp tandoori paste or powder (or a few drops of red food color)
    • 2 tbsp fresh lime juice
    • 1 tbsp olive oil

    For Garnishing

    • 1 small onion, thinly sliced into rings
    • 1 small green bell pepper, thinly sliced
    • 1 lime cut into wedges
    • A few sprigs of fresh coriander (optional)

    Instructions

    1. Put yogurt in a cheese cloth and hang it for an hour to remove excess liquid.
    2. Gently pierce the fish pieces with a fork.
    3. In a medium bowl, add yogurt, garlic paste, ginger paste, green chili paste, red chili powder, ground black pepper, salt, coriander powder, tandoori paste, lime juice and olive oil. Mix until all ingredients are combined well.
    4. Add fish pieces to the yogurt marinade and gently rub the marinade onto the fish. Leave it in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour or overnight for the best results.
    5. Fish can be baked in the oven or on the barbecue.
    6. For oven - Preheat oven the 350F. Line a baking dish with foil and lightly spray with oil. Take fish pieces from the marinade and put it in the baking dish. Bake it for 10-12 minutes or until fully cooked turning over once or twice.
    7. For barbecue - Line the grill with foil wrap. Preheat the barbecue. Lightly spray the foil with oil. Take fish pieces from the marinade and place it on the foil. Turn the fish over frequently to prevent it from sticking. Cook fish for 10-12 minutes or until fully cooked.
    8. Garnish with onion rings, green pepper, lime and coriander sprigs. Serve hot with Pudina chutney.

    Notes

    Tandoori Paste or Powder – Tandoori paste or powder is a classic East Indian marinade made of a mixture of spices, garlic and ginger.
