I had very few cravings while I was pregnant but I did go through a phase where I REALLY wanted French onion dip…SO badly.

One particular night, the craving was especially strong and, although I could have easily run to the store, I was in one of those moods where I didn’t feel like leaving the house. Lucky for me, I had all of the ingredients I needed on hand!

This easy French Onion Dip recipe is the perfect combination of sweet caramelized onion, tangy mayo and sour cream, and spices! It’s creamy, it’s easy, and it’s literally theperfectdip for your favorite chips!

Pregnant or not, this dip brings on some serious cravings. 😉

Why is it called french onion dip?

Although there isn’t a lot of information out there about the history of French onion dip supposedly it was a recipe developed by a French cook in Los Angeles in the 1950s. The recipe was promoted by the Lipton company and put on the back of French Onion Soup Mix and became very popular!

Ingredients

The combination of sour cream and mayonnaise adds amazing tang and creaminess.

  • Unsalted Butter– used for cooking the onion.
  • Yellow Onion– cooked low and slow to be caramelized to perfection.
  • Salt, Pepper, Garlic Powder– the classic seasoning blend that adds just the right amount of flavor to complement the caramelized onions.
  • Sour Cream and Mayonnaise– I LOVE this flavor combination and highly suggest you keep it as is. Greek yogurt or light sour cream instead of sour cream can also work. If you want to lighten it up further, try a light or olive oil based mayo.
  • Worcestershire Sauce – adds a subtle depth of flavor.

Pro tip

Want to mix it up? Try 1/2 yellow onion and 1/2 red onion for color and flavor!

How to make

Pro tip

This dip just gets better as it sits, so feel free to make this a few days in advance!

Tips

  • Dice the onions. Some people like to slice the onions, but I prefer the texture of them diced; they’re less stringy that way.
  • Cook the onions low and slow. This is the best way to caramelize onions. Low heat for a longer period of time. I did 20 minutes and they were perfect!
  • Use a high-quality mayo.I used a not-so-great brand once and the taste was WAY too overpowering. Use the good stuff. It’s worth it.
  • Adjust to your tastes. This is a really forgiving recipe. Prefer more seasonings? Go for it. Huge fan of onions? Add more! Like it spicy? Add cayenne pepper!

What to serve with french onion dip

  • Potato Chips.I love a hearty chip like kettle chips or Ruffle potato chips
  • Crackers.Saltines, Ritz, Triscuits, you name it!
  • Bread.Mini toasts, breadsticks, crostini, etc.
  • Pretzels.Crunchy pretzels or soft pretzels are delicious. Try these air fryer pretzel bites!
  • Veggies.Carrots, peppers, cucumbers, celery…any fresh, crunchy vegetables aredelicious!

How to store

Leftover french onion dip will last in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. I don’t recommend freezing it because the sour cream will separate and the texture will be affected.
